How Long do Apprenticeships Last?

As all apprenticeships are different, the length of them varies. Most often, an apprenticeship will take anywhere between one and four years to complete, depending on the level of the apprenticeship, the student’s abilities and the industry.

An intermediate level 2 apprenticeship is likely to take around 12-18 months, whereas an advanced level 3 apprenticeship will last for around 24 months. Higher apprenticeships can take between three and five years to complete. Apprenticeships can also be taken part-time, which will significantly increase the length of time it takes to complete.

A level 2 apprenticeship is equivalent to five high-grade GCSE qualifications. The student works towards several other work-based learning qualifications during their time as an apprentice including NVQ Level 2, Key Skills and a relevant knowledge-based qualification like a BTEC.

Advanced apprenticeships are equivalent to two A-Level passes. The student works towards several other work-based learning qualifications during their time as an apprentice including NVQ Level 3, Key Skills and a relevant knowledge-based qualification like a BTEC. Students should already have five GCSE qualifications at grade C or above or have completed an intermediate apprenticeship to take part in an advanced apprenticeship.

Higher level apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 4 and a knowledge-based qualification such as a foundation degree. Apprentices can also progress towards higher education including university degrees.

Apprentices who are under 18 must not exceed work for 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week. All apprentices will be entitled to paid holidays and rest breaks of at least 30 minutes if their working day lasts more than four and a half hours.
